Date Night at La Sombra on Burnet

3 Mar

Burnet Road is becoming date night central and with the opening of the new La Sombra Bar and Grill it is only solidifying this claim. I bought a Groupon for La Sombra a month or so ago and was just waiting for the perfect date night to use it and that perfect night came last Friday.

We went somewhat early right about 7pm and it was already packed. They asked if we had a reservation which we didn’t, so make sure to make a reservation, but luckily for us there was room at the bar and we decided to just eat there.

Mojito and Margarita

We sat down and started with drinks and appetizers. I had a mojito and Daniel had the margarita. I thought both were delicious. Not too sweet and just the right amount of tartness. For the appetizers we decided to go with two and then share an entrée. We had to try the Cebiche, so we went with the Cebiche Mixto ($9) with fish and calamari with beans and cilantro. It was to die for. The fish was amazing. We also had the Guasacaca ($7), which is simply Venezulan style gaucamole, corn arepas and instead of chips it was plantain chips. The guacamole was just spicy enough without being overpowering and the arepas were the highlight. I could literally eat tons of these. They are fried Venezualan corn cakes and they are so good! They come three on a plate, which makes it somewhat hard to share. After we each had are one Daniel without thinking started eating the last one. I caught him on the last bite, so I was able to wrestle that away, but I guess I had what was coming to me. There have been countless times when I have “accidently” finished something that we were suppose to share!

Cebiche and Guasacaca

What is great is that their Happy Hour is 3-7 Tuesday- Friday and it is $3 beers, $2 off cocktails, $2 off wine by the glass and half off all appetizers! That is truly an awesome deal.

Moving onto our shared entrée, we had the Moqueca Baiana, which is striped bass, shellfish and polenta cake in a tomato coconut broth with cilantro and olive oil for $19. They served the bass with clams and mussels and they were delicious. The fish was good, but it didn’t exactly mesh perfectly with the sauce. That being said we cleaned the plate and could have eaten more!

La Sombra is definitely out of our price range for us to frequent it too much for dinner. It will definitely stay a date night or special occasion place, but the Happy Hour specials sound great and I can totally see getting after work drinks and appetizers out on their wonderful patio this summer.
