Come out tomorrow to join the Friends of Shipe Park rally against the possible closing of the pool by the city. The Shipe Pool, on 44th Street and Avenue F, is on the chopping block due to the City of Austin’s budget deficient.
Here is an email from the Friends of Shipe Park:
Come on out on Saturday afternoon to support your neighborhood pool! We’re planning cheeseburgers fresh off the grill, Casey’s Snowballs, and watermelon, live music by The Lost Pines (www.lostpinesband.com), and of course the chance to cool off in the pool with your neighbors!
Please come at 4pm to help us make a statement as a community that we value our neighborhood pools! As you know, the two swimming pools at Shipe Park are among a list of pools slated for closure next year as part of the proposed budget cuts in front of city council. We have invited the media to be at this event, so we want to gather a critical mass of supporters at 4pm when we will have brief speeches by Austin Parks Foundation Board President Jill Nokes and City Council Member Laura Morrison. (Burgers and snowballs will follow.)
The details:
Shipe Pool Party and Rally
Saturday, June 25th, 4-6pm
Gather at the Shipe Park Log Cabin
Cheeseburgers, Watermelon, and Snow Cones
Live Music by The Lost Pines
Bring the kids! Bring some friends!
FREE event open to the public.
Note: We will be asking for a $5 suggested donation for food, and we welcome other donations to support the work of Friends of Shipe Park, but donations are not required and we want you to come and be a part of this celebration of our neighborhood park and pool whether you can contribute or not!
It looks like it will be a great event. I haven’t used the pool in awhile, but I used to ride my bike to this pool almost everyday when I was in college. Community Impact has a great informational article about the possible closing.
